    Power Glitch Hobbles Insat-4B Satellite

  • Posted On : 07:00

  • On July 9 Indian Space Organization (ISRO) announced that India’s Insat-4B telecommunications satellite due to the failure of its solar arrays not obtaining the required power so its broadcast capacity becomes half of the original broadcasting capacity.
Insat-4B satellite was launched in March 2007 and is based on and ISRO’s I-3K platform. It is co-located with the Insat-3A satellite in geostationary orbit at 93.5 degrees east longitude. ISRO, which with its Antrix commercial arm designed and built Insat-4B, said it was working to restore at least some of the capacity.
Insat-4B carries 12 Ku- and 12 C-band transponders. ISRO said it had shut down half the Ku- and half the C-band capacity because of what it said is a “power-supply anomaly in one of the two solar panels” that occurred the evening of July 7.
“An expert team is studying the possibilities of partial reutilization of some of the transponders that were switched off, and restoring services,” ISRO said.

We may have seen a lot of people wearing shirts printed numeric digits or something related to math but still their quench of showing their love to math is not fulfilled.
Now there is a beautiful watch made by the genius minds. These watches were created as a limited edition series designed by Rolf Sachs. , the appearance of the watch is like the white chalky scratches on a green chalkboard. You can feel sitting in the classroom with that classic chalk smell always lingering in the air it really takes you back to the beautiful golden days of the school life.
The watch seems pretty it has a black strap and the hands of the watch itself are pretty normal too, although they do mimic pieces of chalk just a little bit.

NASA Releases Low-Light Space Images Captured With Nikon dSLRs

  • Posted On : 05:30

  • At the end of 2009, Nikon managed to secure the order from NASA for D3S digital cameras and seven of its AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lenses were destined to be whisked off into space for photographic documentation.
Now, world are being given the chance to have a look at some of the rather spectacular images taken by astronauts on the International Space Station. Up till now, NASA has captured more than 700,000 images with its own Nikon equipment, showing off the D3S’ noise suppression features and to cope with the low-light conditions of space.
With the supporting standard ISO sensitivity settings of 200 to 12800, the D3S can also be set as high as Hi 3 (ISO 102400 equivalent) or as low as Lo 1 (ISO 100 equivalent). As well as exhibiting a selection of its most inspiring images, NASA has also given a list of kit currently circling the Earth. At present, the Nikon products kept aboard the ISS include:
    • 1 unmodified, standard consumer Nikon D3S digital-SLR camera (whose goal is to capture images of the surface of the earth and night-time scenes)
    • 8 Nikon D2Xs digital-SLR cameras (modified)
    • 36 NIKKOR lenses that includes three teleconverters
    • 7 SB-800 Speedlights
    • 4 D2Xs eyepieces (that are made exclusively for NASA to enable viewing through a space helmet)
More recently, in 2008 a shipment of D2Xs dSLR cameras were ordered, eight of those original bodies are still used in space today.

Interface That Can Respond To 52 Touches At A Time

  • Posted On : 05:00

  • Microsoft Surface is a multi-touch product (developed by Microsoft) that incorporates both software and hardware technology that allow users to manipulate digital content by use of gesture recognition (human gestures are used as input as each human gesture is employed some functionality). This could involve some physical object or motion of hands(as a human gesture).
It has a 360-degree interface, a 30-inch reflective surface with a XGA DLP projector underneath the surface and five cameras in the machine's housing record reflections of infrared light from human fingertips and objects on the surface. The surface can respond to 52 touches at a time.
The four main features of Microsoft Surface are: direct interaction (refers to the user's ability to simply reach out and touch the interface of an application in order to interact with it, without the need for any physical devices such as a mouse or keyboard), multi-touch contact (refers to the ability to have multiple contact points, unlike with a mouse, where there is only one cursor for interaction), a multi-user experience (more than one users can interact with it on different sides of the surface), and object recognition (refers to the device's ability to recognize the presence and orientation of tagged objects placed on top of it).

New Imaging Technique Allows Doctors To 'See' Molecular Activity

  • Posted On : 04:30

  • A new technique that will enable doctors to ‘see’ things that are happening at the molecular level using standard imaging techniques that has been developed by Oxford scientists. Dr Robin Choudhury and his colleagues at the University of Oxford have developed a marker that get attached to particular molecules involved in inflammation, as a result, these molecules ‘light up’ on MRI scans.
The ‘VCAM-1’ molecule plays a key role in inflammation, which contributes to many diseases, including multiple arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, sclerosis and atherosclerosis (a hardening and narrowing of the arteries which can lead to stroke and heart attack).By injecting into the body markers that attach themselves to VCAM-1 molecules, that are visible under MRI scanning, the researchers were able to see exactly where the molecules were in operation, and in what quantities. The ultimate goal is to facilitate the earlier diagnosis, improve treatment techniques and provide more precise monitoring of disease progression that will help in the exact treatment of the disease.
The team has developed the technique to using it in multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. In MS the body’s own immune system, through inflammation attacks the fatty tissue surrounding nerve fibres (myelin), which help nerves carry signals, that leads to a range of problems with vision and movement.
Compared to conventional MRI techniques, the new technique has the potential to reveal disease activity much earlier and, crucially, before tissue destruction has occurred and as a result earlier intervention with drug treatments guided by this information may alter disease progression.

Harry Potter's Invisibilty Cloak Can Be Yours Now

  • Posted On : 03:30

  • Boffins at the Michigan Tech University have invented the invisibility cloak. Unfortunately the cloak doesn't yet work with visible light, only the infrared variety, but it's a start and the scientists are doing there best to move to the visible light.
The cloak is non-metallic and uses metamaterials (artificial materials with unnatural elements) that are made of tiny glass resonators and arranged in a concentric, cylinder shaped pattern. The spokes of this pattern produce a magnetic resonance which can bend light around the small particles that the cloak is made up of. In computer tests, this renders the cloak invisible. But, and this is where it gets really interesting (honestly) - the team is stepping up its efforts in order to test a cloak that has been rescaled and has had ceramic resonators added to work at microwave levels.Within an anechoic chamber, microwaves are transmitted, which are much longer than infrared light waves.
"Starting from these experiments, we want to move to higher frequencies and smaller wavelengths", the researchers said. "The most exciting applications will be at the frequencies of visible light".

    Next Generation Robotic Surgeons

  • Posted On : 01:30

  • Researchers have demonstrated that a robot guided by 3-D ultrasound and artificial intelligence can locate lesions in simulated breast and prostate tissue and take biopsies without the assiatance of human beings. At Duke University, North Carolina, A team of bioengineers 'souped up' an existing robot arm with a purpose-built ultrasound system which acts as the robot's 'eyes' by collecting data from its scan and locating its target. An artificial intelligence program processes the real-time 3D information from the ultrasound and gives the robot specific commands to perform using a mechanical 'hand' that can manipulate the same biopsy plunger device used by the human doctors.
The most recent research that is reported in the current issue of Ultrasonic imaging journal demonstrated that the robot was able to guide the plunger to eight different locations in 93 percent of its attempts. The robot's ability to take multiple samples is important function as multiple samples can help determine the extent of lesions. The researchers say an important challenge to be overcome is the speed of data acquisition and processing, though they are confident this can be overcome with faster processors and better algorithms but to be clinically and medically useful, all of the robot’s actions would need to be in real time.

New 3D Poster Technology Coming Soon

  • Posted On : 00:30

  • The Fraunhofer institute, University of Kiel and RealEyes is showing a new technology that enables 3D posters for large outdoors advertisements (up to 5 meters) and these do not require any glasses. The researchers say that the display are similar to the lenticular images we've seen on postcards but instead of the grooved sheet with the image attached, the new posters use a lens array - 250,000 lenses and each 2 millimeters in diameter. The 3D image of the poster can be viewed from the other side of the street, and the image appearance changes with each step and adjusts to the visual angle. They have already built a DIN-A0 (1 sq meter) poster prototype, and they say that commercialization of larger posters (3 to 5 sq meters) is possible in coming 2011

Almost Invisible Mirrored Tree House Built In Sweden

  • Posted On : 00:00
  • When almost invisible house to be built in Sweden by Tham and Videgard was wrote for the first time, 899 commenters thought it was computer-generated dream, and impossible to build..
But the architects built it, one of six units in a “Tree Hotel”, which recently opened 40 miles south of the Arctic Circle in Sweden, the four-meter glass cube looks as spectacular in reality as it did in the rendering. Kent Lindvall, co-owner of the TreeHotel, has been quoted as saying: “Everything will reflect in this -- the trees, the birds, the clouds, the sun, everything. So it should be invisible nearly in the forest”.
The units are constructed from sustainably harvested wood and have electric radiant floor heating and "a state-of-the-art, eco-friendly, incineration toilet but other than that minor quibble, this appears to be a truly "eco" resort.

ROBOT TEACHERS -- Coming Soon, To A Classroom Near You !!!

  • Posted On : 23:30
  • August 20, 2010

  • Robot teachers are coming and they'll be here by September, programmed with a mission to save our failing schools.
Funded by the Frankenstein Foundation, with the main purpose of creating this mechanical life to teach English. We need this invasion of English-teaching robots because, according to researchers at the University of California, San Diego, an unprecedented number of children in the US start public school with major deficits in basic academic skills that also includes vocabulary skills. So computer scientists at UCSD's Machine Perception Laboratory designed RUBI, a "sociable robot" who successfully taught a group of toddlers ten vocabulary words in only twelve days and RUBI improved the children's word-mastery by a full 25% compared to a control set of words not taught by the mechanical wonder.
Learning languages with machines has been particularly attractive to those looking to spend less while at the same time reducing interaction with humans.

How To Make Your Electronics Batteries Last Longer

  • Posted On : 23:00

  • The financial rewards of long lasting batteries are obvious as you won't be forced to render a perfectly good gadget obsolete before its time or have to shell out money for a replacement battery.
It's also better for our planet Earth since disposing of electronic waste is a growing problem.
Experts say there are plenty of easy things you can do to prolong the life of electronics batteries, here is general advice from Dell, Nokia, and Apple that can also be applied to other brands:
    · Avoid extreme heat
    · Take precautions in cold weather (Bring your battery up to room temperature before turning it on if it's been exposed to very cold temperatures)
    · You don't need to totally discharge your battery periodically to make it last longer
    · Unplug your cell phone from the charger when the battery is fully charged (This saves energy and protects the battery, don’t forget to unplug the charger from the wall)
    · Leave your battery in your laptop

  • Swedish automaker Minesto is developing what it calls it's "Deep Green" technology that are underwater kites tethered to the ocean floor that could produce continuous energy from tidal flows in which a single Deep Green turbine could produce up to 500 kilowatts of electricity. As the tides are much more regular than winds so the energy produced would be less erratic and variable.
The kites have a 12m (almost 40 ft) wingspan and these kites would remain at least 20m (66 feet) below the surface, to prevent conflicts with ocean navigation and minimize visual impact. Tidal flow as low as 1.6 meters/second can be used to create the lift necessary to move the underwater kite.
Since the underwater kite is anchored to the ocean floor, it is able to move at much faster speeds, that makes the turbine more effective, as it traverses back and forth in order to generate electricity, although wind-based deepwater offshore power systems are much difficult to install and operate, Deep Green tidal kites would be well suited for installation in deep waters. Furthermore, the underwater “Deep Green” kites are much lighter and easier to install than the equipment needed for other deepwater generation systems. Deepwater generating systems have the additional expense and technical hurdles of transmitting the power over a greater distance but the higher efficiency and more consistent generation offered by these tidal kites could offset those drawbacks.

Sanyo's New Xacti -Underwater HD Camcorder

  • Posted On : 20:30

  • Sanyo has confirmed that it will be expanding its range of gun-shaped Dual Camera Xacti devices and the launch of the DMX-CA100 - a full HD Dual camera, suitable for underwater use, will take this month.
Unfortunately for Sanyo its competitor, Toshiba, stole a little bit of thunder with its announcement that it will shortly be launching its BWD 10 full HD Waterproof Sportcam with image stabilization and this will no doubt put a spanner in the works for Sanyo’s pre-launch claims of offering the “World’s first waterproof Full HD Dual Camera", a little bad luck for Sanyo but all is not lost. On comparing the specifications of these two forthcoming releases, Sanyo should be able to rest easy, safe in the knowledge that its device has a bit edge when it comes to image capture.
It will be able to withstand up to 3 meters of water. The upcoming Sanyo DMC-CA100 will have the capacity to record up to 60 minutes of full HD video (1920 x 1080 pixels) MPEG-4 files and it will also be able to capture plenty of 14-megapixel stills (4640 x 3480 pixels) due to its SDXC memory card compatibility.
Additionally, for long-distance shots a “Double Range Zoom” feature will enhance wide-angle capture to telephoto zoom at a magnification level of up to 12x and with this feature in tow, photographers and videographers will be able to alternate between two zoom options, although there's no option for optical zoom, its digital zoom focal scope is fairly impressive with a Wide Mode focal range of 40mm to 240mm and a Tele Mode range between 80mm to 480mm, pretty impressive isn’t it.
Like other Xacti models users will be able to make full use of the dual mode design by selecting either video or photo mode using the designated buttons and from previous experience, the ergonomic gun design should also feel comfortable in the hand if you’re trying to steady yourself underwater as you shoot. It will be available in black, yellow or pink color.

    I-TEC Maverick Flying Car

  • Posted On : 20:00

  • We’ve certainly seen some high-tech wonders but sometimes it’s the relatively low-tech aircraft that are the most inspiring and that’s certainly the case with the Maverick, a flying car from Florida’s I-TEC (abbreviation for Indigenous People's Technology and Education Center). While I-TEC initially plans on raising funds by selling Mavericks to recreational users and they also hope to put the vehicles to use in impoverished African nations where missionary pilots can use them to deliver medical drugs and supplies.
As a car alone, the vehicle’s performance is pretty impressive as its 140 hp, fuel-injected, 16-valve Subaru EJ22 engine sends it from 0 to 60mph in 3.9 seconds and it has a top speed of 90 mph (145 km/h), and the whole rig weighs less than 1,000 pounds (454 kg).
When it’s time to fly, the Maverick’s central telescopic mast raises and acts as a wing spar for its chute, properly known as a ram-air wing and the flip of a switch diverts engine power from the rear wheels to the rear-mounted five-blade propeller, which propels the car across the ground, up to its take-off speed of 40mph (64km/h) and the Maverick can take flight in only 300 feet (91 meters).
Once in the air, the vehicle’s electronic fly-by-wire system allows the pilot to steer it with the steering wheel, just like they would on the ground and according to I-TEC, existing sport pilots can learn to fly the Maverick in just 12 hours. Its dash-mounted Garmin GPS allows for both aerial and ground-based navigation.

FridgePad- an iPad Which Is The World’s Most Expensive Fridge Magnet

  • Posted On : 17:30
  • Computers and laptops have already conquered the study and the lounge room and have been making steady inroads in their assault on the kitchen with devices such as Internet capable fridges and digital recipe readers but as soon as the iPad was released, more than a few people were pondering its potential as a kitchen computer to provide the functionality of these devices and more. Well a few creative types even mounted iPads into their cupboard doors.

The FridgePad is little more than a magnetic mounting gadget that turns your iPad into the world’s largest and most expensive fridge magnet and unlike the cupboard door mounting option, the FridgePad won’t leave a gaping hole in the when you want to take your iPad out of the kitchen. The device allows an iPad to be clipped in and out to provide a central place where the iPad can be stored where everyone will be able to find it, pretty amazing isn’t it.

China Introduces 3D Express Coaches Which Can Drive Over Other Vehicles

  • Excessive traffic is a huge problem through out the world. There is too many vehicles on the roads. People usually get annoyed due to this whole situation. Laying railway tracks is also another problem, this process require extra place. But China has decided to utilize the road as the railway track. It seems really odd that roads are already over whelmed with cars and bikes how can it also act as the railway track??

China is building gigantic buses that ride over traffic rather than with it, allowing it to skip gridlock entirely.

Sure, wacky renderings of fantastical objects are nothing new, but apparently Shenzhen Huashi Future Parking Equipment is actually breaking ground on special tracks for these crazy things in Beigin's Mentougou district by the end of the year

LiveRider Turns Your iPhone Or iPod Touch Into A Wireless Bike Computer

  • Posted On : 14:30

  • The popularity of Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch hasn’t just resulted in an explosion of applications but has also spawned a stack of hardware accessories designed to extend the capabilities of said devices. Most common are devices that increase the devices’ battery life but New Potato Technologies has decided for something a bit different with its LiveRider that is a bike mounting system that turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a wireless cycling computer.

The LiveRider mount cradle attaches to a bike’s handlebars to put your iPhone front and center while pedaling and it incorporates a 2.4GHz RF wireless receiving unit that connects to the iDevices’ 30-pin connector, this unit receives information sent wirelessly from a permanently-sealed, dual-mode sensor mounted on the bike’s frame near the rear wheel that measures both bike speed and pedal tempo.

Using the LiveRider application, the device is then able to leverage the capabilities of the iPhone or iPod touch to provide users with a touch screen interface, GPS features providing location and tracking, and accelerometer features to record inclination and the application also includes a file system to save detailed data from each ride, which can be reviewed graphically on the bike, or exported via email and imported into a spreadsheet or database. It also includes a real-time Chase Rider function that lets riders compete against their personal best or pace to a training goal, pretty amazing.

The shock-absorbing handlebar mount cradle helps protect against vibration and debris and allows the iPhone or iPod touch and receiving dongle to be quickly removed, the dongle is powered by the attached iPhone or iPod touch, while the permanently-sealed wireless sensor unit is powered by a permanent Life-Time battery.

Fantastic Sun And Moon Jars-Solar Cells

  • Posted On : 14:00

  • The efficient solar cell is captured in the jars which are named as the Sun and Moon jars. They are actually the rechargeable batteries and a low energy LED. Electric current is created by the solar cell when these jars are placed in sunlight; this current charges the battery for few hours. As the battery is charged during the day time so this energy can be used to power the LED lamp which is placed inside the jar.
The icy jar diffuses the light and gives the appearance of sunlight emitting from the sun or a cool moon glow (a warm colored LED light is used to give a more natural and warm light). You may have noticed that there is no switch on the Sun Jar - in fact there are no visible controls at all - but there is a clever light sensor inside that automatically activates the LED when it gets dark or the lights are turned out! The battery life can be conserved by an override switch inside the lid which can be used to turn off the light at night.
These jars are beautiful as well as by their very nature they are water tight - so the Sun Jar can be placed outside in any weather conditions. A perfect garden light or night light for a child's bedroom. The Sun Jar needs DIRECT sunshine to work! Leave the Sun Jar outside or in a sunny window in direct sunlight for several hours to charge, (electric light indoors is not bright enough!). The Sun and Moon Jars use a standard AA rechargeable battery, which is replaceable.

    Touchscreen iPod Shuffle By Apple

  • Posted On : 13:00

  • A rumour is spread all around that Apple is going to grant touch treatment to the lowliest of iPods, the iPod ShuffleWhich is actually a fantastic idea.
Rumors of a possible 1.7-inch iPod Shuffle with a touchscreen comes from iLounge, which published a bunch of unsubstantiated details on upcoming Apple devices.
To the gut, a tiny touchscreen iPod doesn't make much sense. We're talking about one quarter of the iPhone's screen real estate, and these days the trend in touchscreens is to go bigger, not smaller.
But given the recent history of the iPod Shuffle, a touchscreen would be a logical transformation. With each new model, Apple has relentlessly pursued miniaturization, eventually removing button controls from the third-generation Shuffle and reducing it to finger size.
The reaction was tepid, to say the least. Critics complained that the controls on the Shuffle's included earbuds were difficult to use, and if you wanted to use different headphones, you had to buy a separate adapter or sacrifice the ability to control the music at all. Even worse, some of the earbuds were prone to failure, forcing Apple to launch a replacement program.
This was a classic case of form over function, where the wow factor of a tiny music player didn't make up for its shortcomings in useability. You might say the same thing about the external antenna in the iPhone 4, except that the iPhone 4 actually produces a stronger signal when held properly.
It's for this reason that a touchscreen iPod Shuffle holds appeal; such a device would bring controls back to the mini music player, without making considerable sacrifices. It would also have the side benefit of actually displaying information--a case of function winning over form, for a change.

    2010 HARTGE BMW Z4

  • Posted On : 12:30

  • Anyone with a Z4 sDrive35i (E89) wanting to experience driving pleasure at its best is likely to yearn for somewhat more power under the long bonnet and no (irritating) electronic limitation to 250 km/h and namely a full 350 hp (225 kW) is developed by the twin-turbo power plant of the HARTGE version. Moreover, software modifications to the engine control unit result not only in output being boosted by 44 hp but also in the removal of the V-max restriction.

The focal point of the car is, however, the HARTGE 'CLASSIC 3' aluminium wheels with ten spoke spider, 'Hyper Silver' finish with polished surfaces and HARTGE wheelhub caps with a black emblem and with its decorative screws, this new, one-piece, cast 20" wheel looks like a multi-part design. Dimensions include 9 x 20" with a 35 mm offset for 245/30 ZR 20 tyres at the front and 10 x 20" with a 47 mm offset for super-wide 285/25 tyres at the rear. The suspension is upgraded by fitting a set of sports springs, which lowers the Z4 by 20 mm at the front and 10 mm at the back, pretty impressive.
